Standard Profil is working with Birla Carbon on the development of automotive sealing products incorporating a sustainable carbon black filler. This important development has found its place to its readers at one of most prestigious publications of our industry, European Rubber Journal. Details were presented by Yusuf Güner, SP R&D Group Material Expert, at Rubbercon 2023 in Edinburgh. Güner talked about the development of an EPDM based compound using sustainable carbonaceous material (SCM). A related product is the Birla product, labelled Conyinua 8000 SCM, which is produced by the pyrolysis of end-of-life tries. As well as exhibiting a lower carbon footprint than carbon black, the filler is said to feature a low PAH-content and low electrical conductivity. SCM offers an effective replacement for carbon black, producing EPDM sealing products with good mechanical properties.
